Solar Water Pumping

Rural villages are characterized by lack of access to clean water and/or electricity for pumping clean water for domestic use. Moreover, water may be required for agricultural purposes. Whatever the requirement for water, solar water pumping systems can offer practical and affordable solutions to provide reliable water. The cost of solar panels and solar pumps have decreased drastically over the years, and now is the perfect time to invest in solar water pumping. Solar pump can be used to pump water from underground into a tank to be used later when there is no sunshine or they can be used to pump water from a lower elevation tank or reservoir to a higher elevation tank as it normally happens in villages. Once the higher elevation tank is filled with water, it can go down to the village through gravity. Solar pumps come in different types, as either submersible or surface pump, based on whether they are placed underwater or above the waterline. Solar Energy Systems

Solar energy systems use less electricity and dependency on the grid as well as reducing our environmental impact.  Solar Power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity using Photovoltaics (PV). For smaller systems, this energy can be stored in a battery. The energy stored in a battery can either be used as direct current (DC), or it can be converted to alternating current (AC) by an inverter.

Wind Energy Systems

Wind moving at certain speeds possesses energy. The energy in wind can be converted into useful energy in the form of electricity by wind turbines. Large windfarms consist of consist of hundreds of individual wind turbines which are connected to the electricity transmission network. Smaller wind turbines can also be used for households, schools clinics and community needs.

Solar Water Heating Systems

Solar water heating systems include solar geysers.  For an average household, 30% to 40% of the monthly electricity bill goes to water heating. Our solar water heating systems use heat from the sun to heat domestic water.The benefits of using solar geysers are namely:

High Pressure Solar Geyser

Solar power geysers together with a high pressure system are best suited for your everyday household. Very basic and reliable systems that ensure continued supply of hot water.

The water in the tubes is directly heated by UV rays from sun. Water pressure depends on the pressure present at the premises. No booster pump is necessary for this model of geyser. This product is available in 100L, 150L, 200L and 300L.

Split System

For this system the tank is installed on the wall of the premises or in the ceiling if desired. This product is available in 150L and 200L sizes.

Off-grid renewable energy systems

An off-grid renewable energy system is any system that is not connected to the grid and does not use power generated by main power infrastructure but generates power from renewable sources such as solar, wind, micro hydro or a combination of those. These systems can be classified as a standalone system where they provide power to a single household, energy centre or a plant or they can be classified as a mini-grid where power is provided for a community. In rural communities, off-grid power systems can offer the most cost effective way of obtaining electricity relative to extending the grid.

Having a successful off-grid stand-alone systems requires adopting a combination of techniques and technologies to generate reliable power at reduced cost while maximizing reliability. This means adding battery banks as back-up to intermittent renewable energy sources and using only energy efficient appliances to increase reliability of the system. Typically, a stand-alone system includes the following components:

  • Solar panels / wind turbine

  • Charge controllers

  • Batteries

  • Inverter

Solar Water Heating

Grid Tie Systems

Take advantage of the energy from the sun during the day to reduce the cost of electricity. A grid tie system is connected to the electricity grid of your house. This means during the day energy is used is free from the sun.

Grid tie systems consist of only 2 key components – solar panels and a dedicated grid tied inverter. All the electric power generated by the solar panels feeds through a mains synchronized inverter directly into your distribution board and offsets the power you would normally consume from your electricity distributor.

It will of course only do this when the sun shines! If the panels produce more power than what is being consumed at the time, the balance will flow back into the network and it will actually reverse the electricity meter (not all types of meters can do this though). Since no batteries are used, no independent energy can be stored for later use. This means that energy required at night will still be obtained from your electricity provider.

Using actual figures will explain this better: Let’s assume the typical daily consumption of a building is 30 kWh, over a 24 hour period. If the solar array can produce the 30 kWh during sun hours, a substantial amount of this energy will be flowing back into network and the meter will be turning backwards during this period, building up “credits”. At night, energy will be obtained from the network and the meter will turn forward again, using the “credits”.

If we get the balance right, the meter will show zero usage at the end of the 24 hour period! If our consumption were to increase to 40 units per 24 hour day, we would still get 30 units for free from the solar system and we will only buy the remaining 10 units from the network. If we only consume 20 kWh, we would have “exported” 10 kWh. Since we have now become a power producer, this electricity could theoretically be sold to the network.

The functionality of grid tied systems is such that they will only operate in the presence of an active grid network. If a power failure occurs, they will immediately shut down. This is a legally required safety feature to ensure that the electrocution of workers possibly working on the network cables cannot take place. Since no backup energy is stored in a battery bank, no electricity will be available whilst the power is off.

Mini Grid Systems

Mini Grid / Decentralized systems can be supplied from different sources of renewable energy. The source of electricity may be solar, wind or hydro. Ownership of the systems depend on the business model applied when implementing decentralised systems.

Mini Grids / Decentralised systems are ideal in isolated areas where the grid connection is difficult or not cost-effective, mini-grids/decentralised community systems are necessary.  The advantages are the low cost of energy supply, scalability, ease of addition of other energy sources like hydro or wind.

We design and install mini-grids focusing mainly on the technical, social, administrative and financial aspects in order to bring the sustainable models to customers and communities.

A community based model can be applied for where the community becomes the owner and operator of the hardware. In the case where profound knowledge and more capital is required, the private sector model can be applied. The private sector will own and operate the hardware.

A hybrid model can also be applied in which all other models are combined to benefit from the advantages of each of the models and to minimise shortcomings.

Low Pressure Solar Geyser

A low pressure solar geyser (also referred to as a close coupled unit) is popular for many reasons due firstly to the solar power aspect. There is no need for any external electricity sources.  Secondly, it is a very basic setup. To heat water on a daily basis all that is required is the sun’s radiation. These systems are also popular due to the fact that there are no moving parts involved which maintains the simplicity of the system.

Like the pressurised system, water in the tubes is heated directly by the UV rays of the sun. In this system, water pressure depends on gravity. A booster pump may be necessary where stronger pressure is desired. This product is available in 100L, 150L, 200L, 300L and 350L.
